Designing a Stock Market Research Tool

Worked on the design challenge as a part of my interview process for a product design position

The Challenge

Create a web or mobile app screen that enables a customer to visualize how well their investment portfolio is performing, including gains and losses.

The primary focus should be on visual design, information design, and interaction design. We are interested in how well you incorporate color theory and present beautiful, intuitive, and engaging visual design for a mobile or web app.

The Solution

I designed NVST, an easy-to-use portfolio management web app for budding investors who are passionate about investing but lack knowledge about the subject.

Prototype Demo

The dashboard allows users to:

Easily keep track of their portfolio using intuitive visualizations and simple vocabulary

2. Stay updated with latest portfolio-related news and social media posts

3. Manage a personal watchlist to keep track of stocks they are interested in

4. View potential stocks to buy based on analyst recommendations and their current portfolio

My Process

Step 1: Background Research

Explored dashboards on apps and websites focusing on budding investors such as Robinhood, Yahoo Finance, and Coinbase to understand how the information is structured and presented. This helped me come up with a list of features and design requirements for NVST.

Step 2: Wireframing

Decided to work on a web app (haven't encountered a truly novice focused portfolio management website) and used the design requirements to sketch out how all the info and interface elements would be laid out on the screen.

Step 3: Lo-Fi Design & Crit

Created lo-fi designs and conducted a design critique with 2 UX Designers (my friends) to explore potential interactional and functional issues. Some of the major design changes based on the crit are listed below:

Step 4: Visual Design

Made necessary changes to the lo-fis and explored Dribble and Pinterest for dashboard UI design inspiration. Created a style guide and designed the hi-feds on Figma.
