How to transform a rocking chair the easy way – because who wants to follow a process that's more complicated and time-consuming than it needs to be?

The Rocking Chair Discovered

My husband and I were out garage "sale-ing" when he spotted it. A gorgeous wooden rocking chair that looked like it came right out of the early 1900s. It reminded me of my grandma and the rocking chair she always kept in their bedroom.

If you're an avid fan of hunting for "junk" (aka treasure), you'll know that when you find something unexpected that also falls under the list of things that were on your maybe-someday list, it's magical.

He sat down in the chair and marveled at how comfortable it was. I had to have my turn in it too, and I had to agree with him. It was really comfy! You might say, of course it was if you were only on it for a few seconds!

Let me assure you, I've sat in it at home as well when we have company over, and at the end of the evening my bum is as happy as can be! 😀

I had browsed Pinterest – of course I had browsed Pinterest 😉 – for ideas, and various rocking chair makeovers were at my display as I scrolled down the page. There were colorful ones with hues of blue or yellow, and there were neutral ones done in shades of white, black or gray.

Painting it white seemed like the obvious choice after some thinking – I always want to paint things white. 😉 It's just so pretty! I knew some paint would give it new life and give off that shabby chic vibe that I love.

Here is what it looked like before I got to work on it:

When I got to priming the chair, it hit me that I did NOT want to use a paintbrush for the rest of the project. All of the grooves and edges made it quite the time-consuming process.

Then it hit me: Spray paint! I had seen Rustoleum chalk spray paint at our local Canadian Tire and I knew it would be perfect because it's meant for furniture. It was so much faster spraying the chair instead of the tedious method of using a paint brush. If I were to do it again, I would use a primer spray rather than applying it with a brush.

Therefore, I'm sharing my "blunders" with you and have changed the supply list accordingly with the primer.  I want to save you time if you're like me and don't want to spend a week working on a rocking chair.

Supplies needed to transform a rocking chair the easy way:

  • Sandpaper
  • 2 rags
  • 1 can of primer spray
  • 2 cans of spray paint, color of your choice

Simple rocking chair makeover tutorial:

  1. Sand down chair to smooth scratches and wear.
  2. Remove obvious dust with a dry cloth.
  3. Wipe chair down with damp cloth. Allow to dry.
  4. Prime your chair.
  5. Spray paint your chair using the color of your choice.
  6. Allow chair to dry. I left mine for 24 hours between coats.

I spray painted my chair on a hot day and used a cardboard box and some plastic left over from a previous project to place my chair on. I'd say it was definitely an easy transformation and I loved it more with every coat of paint I sprayed on.

I seriously can't get over how quick and fun it was transforming this rocking chair using spray paint. I don't mind using a paint brush but for this particular project, I wanted it to be as fast as possible without taking too much of my time. So that meant out with the paint brush, in with the spray paint!

I'd love to know, have you ever used spray paint for any furniture makeovers? Did it go as planned or were there any surprises for you along the way?
